VAWA for MEN: How to get your 10 year green card if you are in abusive marriage with a US citizen?

I don’t like to discuss my client’s immigration cases publicly but my team insists I should do that from time to time to inspire other people, especially victims of domestic abuse. So I changed some minor details and I am telling you a true male VAWA story here.

VAWA is a Violence Against Women Act that actually allows both men and women to file for a green card if they can

– prove that their marriage to US citizen was real

– they really were abused (it’s not only physical violence)

– they are good people (no criminal record)

Good thing you can file for VAWA without your spouse knowing and you won’t harm them. This is done this way so people who were morally and physically abused were not afraid of standing up for themselves. So they don’t stay in a bad marriage just for a green card.

In such marriages (and in this story) it often happens that a person who is US citizen blackmails and manipulates his or her immigrant spouse. Unfortunately, I have seen it too often in my 20-years practice.
