NEWS FROM APRIL`S VISA BULLETIN FOR FAMILY PETITION-BASED IMMIGRANT VISAS AND GREEN CARDS

April’s Visa Bulletin just came out and the biggest news is that NO DATES MOVED FOR ANY FAMILY PETITIONS. In other words, because of Covid-19 delays, the Department of State is not moving in processing family petitions and the long lines remain long and getting even longer.

They are not issuing more visas and not moving the lines forward. They have not moved SINCE JULY 2021, for 8 months now. That’s 8 months of someone’s Ukrainian refugee relatives waiting in Poland with no hope of coming to US to their relatives, safety and a full belly.

8 months during children turned 21 years old and fell out of cases completely, never being able to follow their family to US. These were probably 8 months during which people died, were killed (maybe in Ukraine), adult children could not wait to get married anymore to keep their faster category and married, either completely falling out of cases or facing an extra 6 years of waiting. 6 years longer in the “Married Children of US Citizens” F3 category than the F1 single children of US Citizens category.

So sad for thousands of US Citizens and Green Card holders waiting to unite with their families.

Being an immigration lawyer means having days like this when all I did was answer an avalanche of questions how to get Ukrainian refugees here and having to say there is no refugee program, the sky over Ukraine remaining open to the Russian vultures, and then to see this news – that once again, the family petitions categories have not moved a day. A long time ago, someone in the US Congress decided that parents of US Citizens are immediate relatives and don’t have to wait in lines for a green card, but adult children have to wait. And if a kid is under 21, he can come to US, but the next day after turning 21 (when she can finally have a tequila shot in any US state) – she is s..t out of luck. WHY??!

Days like this our team gets mad and frustrated. Days like this we want to walk away. Days like this it’s hard to remember why we do this and how we will look in the eyes of our clients tomorrow.
