☝The Biden administration is facing backlash from immigration advocates as rumors circulate about new border policies that would largely mimic those of the former Trump administration. The controversial proposed plans, similar to Trump-era approaches to border security, would make it more difficult for migrants to seek asylum at the U.S.-Mexico border.
Although official plans have not yet been released, government officials stated that the Biden administration is discussing various ideas to curb border crossings, such as accelerating asylum screenings for migrants in Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) custody and limiting the number of migrants who can approach a port of entry to seek asylum.
👉The proposed plans also include a regulation that would deny asylum claims of migrants who do not first seek protection in another country, like Mexico — a process shockingly similar to the Trump administration’s “transit ban” enacted in 2019.
Rumors of new policies to halt border crossings started shortly after a federal judge blocked Title 42, a controversial Trump-era rule that has allowed immigration authorities to expel migrants over “public health measures” for over a year. With the lifting of Title 42, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is preparing for the possibility that the daily rate of border crossings doubles in the coming months. The Biden administration has experienced immense political pressure over the last year as it grapples with record breaking border crossing numbers.
▶The proposed policies are in stark contrast to Biden’s campaign promise to dismantle Trump-era immigration policies and repair lasting damage on the country’s immigration system. Although not finalized, some government officials said that the new regulations could go into effect as soon as this month.
