Asylum system at the US Borders is about to be overhauled

The asylum system for asylum seekers at the US Borders is about to be overhauled.

Those seeking asylum at the border will now have a quick Asylum interview with an asylum officer and not an immigration judge. This is meant to reduce waiting times to see a judge from years to months.

The new system is scheduled to take effect May 28, 2022 after it’s published in the Federal Register.

The change will NOT affect most asylum seekers as long as a pandemic-related rule limiting access at the border remains in force and many asylum seekers are sent away at the border due to Covid dangers. But the new system will probably be in place once that rule is lifted and the uptick in asylum requests begins.
