4 Steps to Quickly Check Your U.S. Immigration Case Status

At Shepelsky Law Group, we know how stressful waiting for updates on your immigration case can feel. Clients often ask us: “How do I check what’s happening with my case status?” The good news is that there are simple tools available to check the status of your case without leaving your home.

Below are fast steps to help you stay informed and in control:

Check Online at USCIS

Most immigration cases are handled by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).

  1. Go to the official USCIS Case Status Online page.
  2. Enter your receipt number (it begins with three letters such as EAC, WAC, LIN, or SRC, followed by numbers).

The system will immediately show the latest updates, including whether your case is pending, approved, denied, or if USCIS needs more information from you.

Alternatively, you can create your ‘myUSCIS’ personal account at USCIS.gov and add the receipt numbers of your pending cases into your account. You can use this account to check case statuses, receive real-time updates, and file online USCIS forms like:

Call USCIS Directly

If you prefer to check your case status by phone:

  1. Dial 1-800-375-5283 (the USCIS Contact Center).
  2. Follow the prompts to enter your receipt number.

You will hear an automated update. If needed, you can request to speak with a live officer. Make sure to have both your receipt numbers and Alien Registration Number ready before calling.

Check Immigration Court Cases (EOIR) by Phone

If your case is in immigration court (removal or deportation proceedings), you need to use a different system:

  1. Call the EOIR Hotline at 1-800-898-7180.
  2. Enter your Alien Registration Number (A-number).

How to Find Your A-number

Your Alien Registration Number is a unique 9-digit number assigned by immigration authorities. It can be found on:

  • Your Notice to Appear (Form I-862)
  • Your green card
  • Your work permit/EAD

It usually looks like: A209-456-789.

You will use this number as your personal identifier until you become a U.S. citizen. You will still need it even after naturalizing for tasks like filing petitions for relatives or applying for a U.S. Passport.

The EOIR phone system will inform you of:

  • Your next hearing date
  • Your case status
  • The location of your court

You can also check how many days have elapsed on your Employment Authorization Asylum pending clock. You need at least 150 days to file your initial EAD application after applying for asylum.

Check Immigration Court Cases (EOIR) Online

You can also check your court case online:

  1. Visit the EOIR Automated Case Information Portal: https://acis.eoir.justice.gov/en/
  2. Enter your A-number.

The system will display your:

  • Hearing date
  • Court address
  • Case status

Why This Matters

Checking your immigration case status regularly helps you:

  • Avoid missing deadlines or requests for documents
  • Know when USCIS or the immigration court has made a decision
  • Stay confident and better prepared as your case progresses
